Berlin wall
There are some structures that can be
considered as great man-made structures of the world, each one of these
structures has unique features that make it special. One of these structures is
Berlin Wall is placed in Germany. Yalta agreement between US and Soviet Union
was to separate the country into two deferent countries that will be the
structure to be discussed in these pages.
The Berlin wall is a wall that
separates the two cities of Berlin in Germany; it was built by the Communist
government of East Germany on August 13, 1961. The purpose of building Berlin
Wall is that after the splitting of Berlin into two parts , East Berlin and
West Berlin in the year 1949 , millions of people from East Germany shifted
from the East side of the city to the West one . 1.6 million In Berlin alone
moved to the west. To stop that movement the communist government of East
Germany decided to build a wall so as to separate the two sides of East Berlin
and West Belen in order to keep the people of the country in. There is another
reason behind building Berlin Wall which is an economic reason since many
educated people shifted from East Berlin to West Berlin because life was
cheaper there to settle and work there the thing that affected the economy of
the East part.
Regarding the period of time the wall
took to be built, the Berlin Wall was built over night between 12th
and 13th of August 1961. But the recent part of the wall, which the
most refined one was started in the year 1975 and completed in the year 1980,
it cost 16,155,000 East German Marks that counts to about $3,638,000. The
Berlin Wall, that hideous, 28-mile-long scar through the heart of a once proud
European capital, not to mention the soul of a people.
After Germany had unified again on
the 3rd of October 1990, the Berlin Wall was demolished and its
building units were taken away, but there are a few sections of the Wall still
remain and some of them are used as museums.
Berlin Wall is in reality a
collection of walls and fences made at different stages with different random
designs and with different types of material. The materials used for building
the Wall vary greatly , there was a concrete wall in the extreme east of 2-3
meters height, then there was a contact wire fence with barbed wire fence,
another part was made of equipment and trenches that worked to stop the
vehicles from getting in, then comes the metallic fence. So the materials used
in building the Wall include, concrete, wires, and metals.
Transporting the materials to build
the wall needed special permits .Since the construction process of the Wall was
not a regular one, there was no proper design for the wall so no definite
designer is named for Berlin Wall.
Berlin Wall is considered as being a
simple of separation of one nation, it separated family members from each other
because somewhere at the East side of Berlin and others were at the West side
when the Wall was built. It stood there for 28 years, but when Germany unified
again people celebrated their pleasure by climbing the Wall, demolishing it and
taking its building units away.
The design of the Wall was not
homogeneous because it lacks proper design and proper designer vision, so it
was not considered as a simple more than being a building.
Today some parts of the wall become
museums such as the five watch towers left from the 302 ones, and the
"death zone" is still found there in many places, some of these parts
are used as parks and some are used as cultivated lands. There is also a museum
at Checkpoint Charlie and a cemetery near the Checkpoint Charlie on the memory
of the victims of the war.
